With oral sedation, you remain awake but deeply relaxed. With IV sedation, you enter a twilight state and may drift in and out of light sleep. Most patients remember little to nothing about the procedure afterward, though you can still respond to simple instructions.

Oral sedation effects typically last 2 to 6 hours, while IV sedation wears off more quickly but can leave you drowsy for 4 to 6 hours. Full recovery usually takes 24 hours. You should rest at home and avoid driving, alcohol, or making important decisions during this time.

Sedation is ideal for patients with moderate to severe dental anxiety, sensitive gag reflexes, difficulty getting numb, or those undergoing long or complex treatments.
